Prainha is a chain of tiny coves separated by arches, caves and rock ledges, best explored at low tide from Praia dos Três Irmãos. At high tide the sand almost disappears, and Portimão classes it as a limited-use beach because of frequent rock falls. Beautiful for an hour at low tide, not for a full beach day.
Prainha, the “little beach”, sits between Alvor and Praia do Vau. Instead of one stretch of sand, it is a series of small coves divided by rock formations: arches, ledges, chasms and caves, some with messages carved into the walls by visitors over the years. It is also known as Praia do Caniço, after the restaurant built into its cliff.
Getting there
There are three ways to reach the sand:
- a stairway from the neighbouring beach to the west;
- the tunnel and lift of the O Caniço restaurant, which runs down from the cliff top;
- along the shore from Praia dos Três Irmãos at low tide, through passages under the cliffs.
What it is like
Small, sheltered pockets of sand, clear water and plenty of rock to explore. Divers come here too: the coast offers good spots, and the Ocean Revival artificial reef, made of sunken ships, lies about 3.7 km offshore.
Tides
At high tide the sand is almost completely covered and the beach splits into three small areas, with three large rocks in the middle. Plan your visit around low tide, and if you came along the shore, leave in good time: after mid tide the water rises quickly in the passages. See how tides change Algarve beaches.
Safety
Portimão classes Prainha as a limited-use beach: rock falls are common along almost its whole length. In August 2022 part of the cliff collapsed and the maritime police cordoned off the area. Sit near the water, never under the cliff, and stay out of any fenced zones. See beach flags and cliff safety.
Facilities
The clifftop restaurant O Caniço sits right above the sand. In season there are showers and toilets. Prainha is not on the official list of supervised bathing beaches for 2026, so do not count on a lifeguard.
