Short answer

You reach Praia da Senhora da Rocha without a single step, down a sloping road at the end of the M530. In summer the small car park by the beach is full, so expect to walk about 250 metres down from the upper car park, and the same back up a fairly steep slope. Do not leave without crawling through the tunnel in the cliff to Praia Nova: it is the only way there, and one of the most fun experiences on this coast.

At the eastern edge of the municipality of Lagoa, just before Armação de Pêra, a narrow headland juts out into the sea with a small white chapel on its tip: Nossa Senhora da Rocha, Our Lady of the Rock. The beach below it takes its name from the chapel. On the other side of the cliff lies a second beach, Praia Nova, which you can only reach through a tunnel in the rock.

Getting there and parking

Follow the M530 towards the sea; the road ends right at the beach. There are two car parks:

  • The lower car park, about 150 metres from the sand, is tiny, with room for about 10 cars. In the summer season it is almost always full.
  • The upper car park, about 250 metres from the beach, is where most people end up in summer.

Come in the morning in July and August, and if the lower car park is full, do not wait for a space: go straight to the upper one.

Getting down to the sand

There are no steps. You walk down a smooth, even asphalt road and ramp at the end of the M530, or straight from the road, and step onto the sand of Praia da Senhora da Rocha.

The surface is easy underfoot. The catch is the gradient: the road is fairly steep, and the walk back up, especially from the beach to the upper car park in the afternoon heat, is hard work for anyone who is not used to it. Take it slowly and bring water. For people who cannot manage stairs at all, it is still easier than the long staircases at most of the neighbouring coves.

The tunnel to Praia Nova

This is the secret of Senhora da Rocha. A tunnel through the cliff starts on Praia da Senhora da Rocha and leads to Praia Nova, the beach on the other side. It is the only way to get there.

At the Senhora da Rocha end, you walk in standing upright. The tunnel then gets lower and lower towards Praia Nova, and near the exit you have to get down almost on your knees and crawl out. Bending your head is not enough. If you are tall, it is even more of an adventure.

It is the kind of moment you will want to film on your phone, and it rewards you with a quieter beach on the other side.

A few practical points:

  • Leave big bags and cool boxes on Senhora da Rocha, or be ready to push them through ahead of you.
  • Watch your head and your knees on the rock.
  • Praia Nova is an officially limited-use beach: at high tide, much of its sand lies within the zone at risk of rock falls from the cliffs. Go around low tide and keep away from the base of the cliff. See beach flags and cliff safety.

What it is like

Praia da Senhora da Rocha is a sheltered cove of golden sand under the cliffs, with the chapel’s headland on one side. The water is generally calm and clear in summer. It is quieter than the big beach of Armação de Pêra next door, but has the same easy feel.

The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha

The small white chapel on the headland is one of the best-known landmarks of this coast. The views from around it, down onto the beaches on both sides and along the cliffs towards Marinha, are some of the finest in the area, especially in the evening.

Awards and lifeguards

  • Blue Flag in 2026, and the Gold Quality award from Quercus.
  • Bathing water rated excellent.
  • Lifeguards during the 2026 bathing season, from 1 June to 30 September.

Tides and safety

At high tide the sand narrows towards the cliffs on both beaches. Keep away from the base of the rock face and stay behind any warning signs. See how tides change Algarve beaches.

Our tips

  • Visit the chapel viewpoint before going down to the beach.
  • Go through the tunnel to Praia Nova at low tide, and film it.
  • In summer, park straight at the upper car park and save yourself the search.
  • Pair it with Praia da Marinha, a short drive west, for a day of the best Lagoa scenery.

Questions people ask
