Praia da Rocha is the big, easy beach of Portimão: more than a kilometre of wide sand below a clifftop strip of hotels, bars and restaurants. It has a Blue Flag, lifeguards in summer, a long boardwalk and step-free access, so it works for almost everyone. Do not expect a hidden cove: this is a lively resort beach.
Praia da Rocha stretches west from the mouth of the Arade river, below the resort district of the same name, about 2 km south of Portimão’s centre. It is one of the widest beaches in the Algarve, so even in August there is room on the sand.
Getting there and parking
The beach runs below Avenida Tomás Cabreira, the clifftop avenue lined with hotels, restaurants and bars. The simplest option is the Rocha Prime underground car park, with 272 paid spaces on three levels, open all year. There are also free car parks further from the beach; in summer they fill up fast.
Getting down to the sand
There are several ways down:
- Steps lead down from points along Avenida Tomás Cabreira.
- Step-free routes: a steep paved road comes down opposite the Hotel da Rocha, and from the marina end you can walk onto the boardwalk near the fortress.
- A staircase cut into the cliff connects the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina with the beach.
Once on the sand, a boardwalk of about 1.5 km runs along the beach, which makes it easy with pushchairs and wheelchairs. It was rebuilt in 2022.
What it is like
Wide, flat sand, golden cliffs and rock stacks at the western end, and the whole resort on the cliff top. Bars and restaurants along the boardwalk have toilets. In summer the beach is busy and the avenue above stays lively late at night, with clubs, pubs and a casino. The beach also hosts big music festivals.
At the western end, a tunnel through the rock leads to the small, rocky Praia dos Três Castelos, and at low tide you can carry on along the shore towards Praia do Vau.
The fortress viewpoint
At the eastern end, the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina guards the mouth of the river. It was designed in 1621 and built in the following years to defend the mouth of the river; today it has a café and a terrace with views over the beach, the river and the village of Ferragudo on the other side.
Awards and lifeguards
- Blue Flag in 2026.
- Accessible beach (Praia Acessível) in 2026, with amphibious chairs and an adapted beach mat in summer.
- Lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September 2026, and a first-aid post in July and August.
Sand works
Praia da Rocha is wide partly because of sand added in 1970, when nourishment widened it from about 120 to 200 metres. In November 2025 the environment agency began moving about 220,000 cubic metres of sand from Rocha to the narrower beaches to the west, as far as Vau. The works were paused before summer 2026 and were due to resume after the bathing season, so parts of the beach may be fenced off for a while.
Our tips
- Go to the fortress terrace at sunset for the view along the beach.
- If you want something quieter, walk through the tunnel to Três Castelos or follow the shore west at low tide.
