- Low to mid tide
Praia dos Três Irmãos is two beaches in one: an easy, accessible Blue Flag beach at the eastern end of Alvor's long sands, and a maze of caves, arches and passages through the rocks that leads to the coves of Prainha at low tide. Come between low and mid tide to explore, and keep an eye on the water.
Três Irmãos, the Three Brothers, takes its name from three rocks standing in the sea, which local fishermen tell a legend about. To the west, the beach opens onto the long, flat sands that run all the way to Alvor, about 7 km of walking. To the east, the cliffs close in and the fun begins: caves, arches and hidden passages that connect a string of small coves.
Getting there and parking
There is a paid car park close to the beach, at about €2 a day, and free parking further away. Another car park sits at the end of an unpaved track from the Torralta development. Portimão is about 15 minutes away by car.
Getting onto the sand
How you get down depends on where you arrive:
- From the eastern end, a boardwalk leads onto the sand, and this is the accessible route.
- From the cliff tops, stairs lead down at several points, some of them steep. Expect a walk of 5 to 10 minutes from the parking.
What it is like
Wide sand, clear water and dramatic rock formations. A restaurant is built into the cliff, with toilets below it, and umbrellas with two chairs cost about €13 a day. The western side is ideal for long walks; the eastern side is for exploring.
The low-tide passages
At low tide you can walk east from Três Irmãos into a series of coves through narrow gorges, tunnels and gaps under the cliffs, as far as Praia da Prainha, where a double arch waits at the far end.
Explore between low and mid tide. After mid tide the water rises quickly in the passages and some coves are cut off. Watch the sea, keep away from the base of the cliffs and turn back early. See how tides change Algarve beaches.
