Short answer

Caneiros is an easy, family-friendly cove a few minutes east of Ferragudo: a wooden staircase from the car park, a restaurant, toilets and lifeguards in summer, and a Blue Flag in 2026. At low tide you can walk west to the wild, facility-free Praia do Torrado. Keep away from the cliffs: much of the sand lies in the rock-fall risk zone.

Praia dos Caneiros is about 200 metres of sand under golden cliffs in the parish of Ferragudo. Offshore, about 200 metres out, stands the Leixão da Gaivota, a rock stack where seabirds roost.

Getting there and parking

Caneiros is a few minutes’ drive from Ferragudo. There is a small free car park above the beach, which fills up in summer.

Getting down to the sand

A wooden staircase leads down from the car park, past the beach restaurant, to the sand.

What it is like

A sheltered cove with golden cliffs and the seabird rock out at sea. Sunbeds are available in season, and you can rent kayaks and pedalos.

Awards and lifeguards

  • Blue Flag and Gold Quality from Quercus in 2026.
  • Lifeguards during the 2026 bathing season, from 1 June to 30 September.
  • Restaurant, toilets and showers.

Safety

Caneiros is on the list of Algarve beaches where half the sand or less is safe from cliff falls. Sit towards the water, not under the cliff, and stay out of marked risk zones. See beach flags and cliff safety.

Praia do Torrado

Next to Caneiros, Praia do Torrado (also called Praia do Vale da Azinhaga) is reached only on foot from Caneiros at low tide, or by boat. It has no facilities and no lifeguard, and it is used unofficially by naturists. Towards Ferragudo, the small Ponta do Altar lighthouse, built in 1893, stands on the headland above the mouth of the Arade. Check the tide before you walk over so you can get back.
